The Score: Top Free Downloads This Week
1. Jeffery Lewis & the Junkyard live on WFMU is the top pick of the week. Their new album, ‘Em Are I, is one of the best release of the last month, and Lewis & co. can kill it live. Pay special attention to track three, “Roll Bus Roll,” which is simply one of the catchiest folk-punk anthems I’ve ever heard.
2. White Rabbits have been all over the place since the release of their Brit Daniels produced It’s Frightening. They performed on WOXY earlier in the week, and, as always, are damn fine in the live setting.
3. John Hardy & the Public put out a free EP this week full of Randy Newman covers. It’s called Little Criminals: Songs From Randy Newman and St. Louis’ Riverfront Times is hosting a free download of it. (They’ll be opening for White Rabbits on their two dates in Missouri.)
4. A great site I haven’t been super familiar with, Southern Shelter (a little similar to NYC Taper), posted a live bootleg of a recent Thrones performance at Caledonia. Thrones is the solo project of Salem, Oregon native Joe Preston. The project is very much in the spirit of Sunn O)))) or Earth.
5. Sub-Pop’s Cyber-Sex Sampler is a killer comp of the best bands Sub-Pop is toting at the moment. It’s a 14 track sampler that includes songs from Vetiver, Flight of the Conchords, Tiny Vipers, Zak Sally, Fruit Bats and a few little known bands you might have heard of: Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine, The Vaselines, and Handsome Furs.
