Britt Daniel Writing Songs with Jon Brion

britt-daniel_spoonIt’s been a little while since anyone has really heard anything from Spoon, as a collective, but frontman Britt Daniel seems to have been plenty busy in recent months. Daniel has just finished up producing the new album from New York-based White Rabbits, and according to a profile in Texas Monthly he is now writing songs with Jon Brion. Brion, famed song-writer behind the good version of Fiona Apple’s Extraordinary Machine, soundtracker extraordinaire, and generally cool dude, has holed up with Daniel in LA to demo some new tracks.

Brion, who recently remixed some tracks for a new Of Montreal EP, has worked with Spoon in the past producing “The Underdog,” a track from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

Daniel also makes mention that the group is headed to their studio in Portland in the coming months to start hashing out some of the new tracks he’s been working on. He’s got a few songs together and has been demoing, but it does not appear as though Spoon is anywhere near releasing another album.

Daniel plans to convene the band in early March in a studio in Portland, his home-away-from-Austin for the past four years. He predicts he might have a half a record’s worth of songs ready by then. And he might like how they sound with the band. Or he might not. So the next long-player won’t likely come before 2010.

The band isn’t going to have a disc ready for a while, which is rather unfortunate, but it’s nice to know an album (with the tentative title Me and Matty Pickles) is in the works.

Meanwhile, the world longs for more beautiful, minimalistic pop jams.
