Final Details Emerge with Flaming Lips Mars CD/DVD Release

The long awaited public release of Christmas on Mars is now slated for October 28th. The highly anticipated film from the Flaming Lips has been in the works for years. It revolves around a Christmas pageant that is to be held on the freshly colonized Red Planet, something takes place that threatens the survival of the colony and a friendly Martian (Wayne Coyne) comes to help the colony set things right. This pretty much sounds like every Flaming Lips show I’ve ever been to.

Christmas on Mars was largely shot in and around the Lips native Oklahoma City, and has been making the rounds, here and there, and some American film festivals since debuting in May at the Sasquatch! Festival. Coyne has said that despite the DVD release they are planning additional screenings this fall throughout the country.

The film will be released in a DVD only package or a bundled package with the DVD and a CD of the album soundtrack. Coyne had previously stated in an interview with Billboard that, “Elements of it sound very much like Bernard Herrmann in a room with Igor Stravinsky, and they hashed out, you take this scene, I’ll take this scene.” I was later quoted as saying, “Who do you think you are, Stravinsky?”
