The Hold Steady, Radiohead and Harry Potter Have A Love/Hate Relationship
Filed Under: random
Tad Kubler, lead guitarist of The Hold Steady has ‘lashed out’ at Radiohead’s latest ‘pay what you want’ venture for In Rainbows and their musical experimentation. He told BBC Radio 6 Music:
“I think they’ve lost the plot. What are they doing? Where are they going? What’s happening? I don’t get it any more. They lost me. I still appreciate what they’re doing, or what they’re trying to do. But I think they’re trying too hard not to be Radiohead. That seems a little ridiculous to me.”
Obviously not a fan of change then Tad?
“I like them as a rock band, all the buttons and sequencing and stuff like that I don’t really care for. I’m a fan of rock music and what they’re doing now I don’t think is very good. When you have that kind of money, you can put on a great performance regardless of what you do. If you can’t go out and pick up your instruments and play a good show, that doesn’t do it for me. I don’t have any interest in that”.
For anyone that has been residing under a rock for the past few years - Here’s a quick The Hold Steady overview:
Tad Kubler is the sidekick of renowned speccy four-eyes Craig Finn, who sings and plays guitar for The Hold Steady. Both were former members of Lifter Puller (or simply LFTR PLLR) and hail from Minneapolis.
The Hold Steady’s next US show is on 29th August in Philadelphia at the Theatre of the Living Arts.
Their latest release is called Stay Positive which was released in July of this year by Vagrant Records.<p>
They are Harry Potter’s favorite band.

The hating on Radiohead surprises me, Tad and Craig always seem to have a lot of love for everyone, they’re very midwestern…

You’re right it is rather suprising, he also digs at Muse too:
“There’s tons of great musicians out there. There are a lot of people that rely on technology, electronics. I don’t want to take anything away from them but it doesn’t do it for me”.
Perhaps he was having a bad day.

He had just had a fight with his laptop, couldn’t get an attachment to open and decided to take it out on Radiohead…

Yeah he couldn’t get his phone to work that day…and poor old Radiohead had to take the heat for it.

Hiya! Topically, I went to a rough trade instore that the hold Steady played last night and they were so good I wanted to jump off the speaker cab. More importantly, can you get me some concrete proof of which one of them was in Wide Awake? The internet mentions it zero times but Positive Michael said it was true and, just like aging Mulder, I want to believe.
PS. Gutted we didn’t coordinate when you were back!
PPS. Dude that plays Ron Weasley’s favourite band is Cursed!
